Due to the rise of life expectancy, dysfunction of pelvic floor, like prolapses, are becoming more and more an important problem for women.

Surgical intervention is not always suggested for all patients. That is why, perineal rehabilitation is considered a valid help to solve or reduce symptoms linked to prolapses.

In case of  serious prolapses (2° or 3° degree) a really important support can be given by the use of Pessaries.

Pessaries are medical devices, generally made of rubber or silicone, that can be introduced in the vagina and used in case of urogenital prolapses.

Pessaries are not therapeutic devices, but they allow to limit patient’s discomfort.

These instruments can represent a very effective tool when the surgical intervention is contraindicated and this is true in particular for the following cases:

  • rectocele
  • cystocele (bladder prolapse)

uterus prolapse

One of the most common pessaries it the ring-form pessary.

This pessary has to be inserted by the gynaecologist  in the vagina between the posterior vaginal fornix and the pubic bone. Commonly, it should be substituted by the physician after six months in order to avoid decubitus wounds or infections. Generally, a part from specific cases, it is well tolerated by women’s body.
